Best Summer Themes for Older Adult Events

By Monica B., CEO of FUN at Heyday Activities & Events

Since Summer Solstice was only two days ago, what better time to crank up the creativity and start planning events that bring sunshine to your community—indoors and out? Whether you work in Assisted Living, Memory Care, or Skilled Nursing, these senior summer party themes are designed to include everyone and create joyful memories for residents and staff alike.

Splish Splash Bash

This one’s extra close to my heart. I did it many times with the AL and Memory Care residents, and it was an absolute hit.

I brought in small inflatable pools so residents could dip their feet, and passed out water guns to anyone who wanted to play. Staff from other departments joined us outside, we got soaked, we laughed, and it became something everyone looked forward to.

Even the residents who didn’t want to get wet had a blast just watching the team run around like kids. One Assisted Living resident said, “This is the best day we’ve had all year.” That’s the Heyday effect right there.

Try This:

  • Water balloon toss (use sponges for a safer option)

  • Splash pools for feet soaking and giggles

  • Frozen fruit pops and beach towels for a “pool day” vibe

  • Let residents vote for which staff member gets sprayed!

Tropical Staycation Luau

No passport needed! Transform your space into an island escape with beachy music, bright decor, and fruity drinks.

Ideas for All Abilities:

  • Coconut-scented lotions for a sensory moment

  • Tropical fruit tastings (pineapple, kiwi, mango)

  • Hula-themed photo booth

  • Seated limbo or sand art crafts

Heyday Tip: Add “Aloha” postcards for residents to write notes to family or pen pals.

Slice of Summer: Watermelon Festival

Celebrate this summer staple with a sweet, seedless (or seed-spitting!) good time.

Ideas:

  • Watermelon-themed bingo

  • Taste test different melon varieties

  • Watercolor painting with watermelon slice stamps

  • Watermelon trivia with fruity prizes.

Old-Fashioned County Fair

Bring the charm of a summer fair to your community—minus the crowds and fried dough.

Ideas for All Levels of Care:

  • Ring toss, duck pond, or “fish bowl” toss

  • Art or baking contest with resident judges

  • Cotton candy & popcorn carts

  • Music from the 1950s–70s to set the nostalgic tone

Sounds of Summer: Music Fest

Music brings everyone together. Whether it's Elvis, Motown, or Jimmy Buffett, let the rhythm lead the way.

Activities:

  • Karaoke (yes—even seated!)

  • Live or virtual music performances

  • DIY shakers and ribbon wands

  • Dance-along or name-that-tune games

Ice Cream Social Club

This crowd-pleaser never goes out of style—just give it a Heyday twist!

Ideas:

  • Build-your-own sundae bar

  • Root beer float station

  • Staff dressed as vintage soda jerks

  • Flavor guessing game or “blindfold taste test”

Sunflower Days

Perfect for low-key summer mornings or nature-loving residents.

Ideas for all care levels:

  • Grow sunflowers in pots or recycled containers

  • Paint or color sunflower art

  • Host a sunflower photo wall

  • Sensory stroll outdoors to spot summer blooms

The best event ideas for nursing homes are simple, sensory, and full of heart. Whether it’s planning a sunny music fest or a splashy outdoor bash, these senior summer party themes bring more than entertainment—they build connection, joy, and lasting memories.

Let Heyday help you bring the fun—without the overwhelm.

Because older adults deserve a summer worth remembering.
