From Coloring Books to Connection: What Real Engagement Looks Like

By Monica B., CEO of FUN at Heyday Activities & Events

When I first became an Activities Director, I walked into a calendar packed with puzzles, coloring sheets, and the occasional game of balloon volleyball. On paper, it was “full.” But when I looked around the room, it didn’t feel full—of energy, of laughter, of connection.

And that’s when it hit me: activity doesn’t equal engagement.

Yes, coloring books have their place. For some residents, they’re calming or familiar. But if that’s all we’re offering, we’re missing the mark. Older adults—just like anyone else—crave purpose, variety, and moments that feel meaningful.

Real engagement happens when a resident lights up while sharing their life story during a group chat. When someone with memory loss starts humming along to a song from their youth. When two neighbors laugh together during a themed social they didn’t even want to come to at first.

That’s connection. That’s engagement. That’s Heyday.

In my experience, the most impactful moments didn’t come from coloring inside the lines—they came from breaking the mold. We started introducing interactive games, storytelling prompts, music experiences, and sensory-rich activities that spoke to who people are, not just what they could still do.

And the difference? Night and day.

If you’re still filling calendars with busywork, it’s time to rethink what “engagement” really means. Because real joy doesn’t come from a checklist—it comes from connection.
