Beyond the Game: How to Design Super Bowl Activities for Seniors That Elevate Engagement in Senior Living

By Monica B., CEO of FUN at Heyday Activities & Events

Game day atmosphere highlighting creative Super Bowl activities for senior living communities

Super Bowl Sunday isn’t just about football. It’s about tradition, connection, memories, and belonging.

And when done intentionally, it can become one of the most powerful engagement opportunities of the entire year, especially for older adults who grew up watching the game with family, hosting gatherings, and celebrating Sunday rituals.

At Heyday, we don’t believe in just “putting the game on TV." We believe in designing experiences.

Here’s how Super Bowl Sunday can become something truly special on February 9th.

It Starts With Atmosphere, Design the Activities

A great experience begins before the first kickoff.

Think beyond the screen:

  • Team-colored decorations throughout the space

  • A mock “stadium entrance” with music and announcements

  • A tailgate-style setup with themed snacks

  • A photo booth with foam fingers, jerseys, and football props

  • Staff wearing jerseys and engaging residents in team banter

When the environment feels festive, residents feel invited, not obligated.

Elevate Engagement by Making It Interactive (Even for Non-Football Fans- like me)

Not everyone loves football, I am that person!!! And that’s okay. The magic is in offering multiple ways to participate.

Some engagement-friendly ideas:

  • Super Bowl Bingo (with football-themed terms)

  • Prediction cards: Who will win? Final score? Coin toss?

  • Halftime trivia from different decades: "I'm here for BENITO" (for example)

  • Commercial voting: funniest, cutest, most emotional

  • “Tailgate Taste Test” with rating cards for snacks

Now it’s not about watching. It’s about being part of something.

Super Bowl Activities= Memory Lane

For many older adults, football connects to:

  • Family traditions

  • Sunday dinners

  • Watching games with spouses

  • Hosting neighbors

  • Childhood memories

Use this moment to spark conversation:

  • “Who did you watch the Super Bowl with when you were younger?”

  • “Do you remember your first Super Bowl?”

  • “Did your family have traditions around game day?”

That’s not entertainment. That’s meaningful engagement.

Why Moments Like This Matter More Than We Realize

Events like the Super Bowl are more than fun. They are powerful tools for:

  • Reducing loneliness

  • Strengthening social bonds

  • Rebuilding identity

  • Creating shared experiences

  • Helping residents feel connected to the world outside their walls

And when engagement is done thoughtfully, families notice. Staff feel energized. Communities feel alive.

The Heyday Difference

Anyone can turn on the TV.

But it takes intention, creativity, and heart to turn an ordinary Sunday into:

“That was one of my favorite days here.”

That’s the difference between hosting an activity and designing an experience.

And that’s the Heyday way. Need Activity Calendar ideas and programming that makes a difference? Check our calendars here
